If you seen it and didn't know it, it is based on a true story. Very disturbing.

I saw it at the theatrers when it first came out and it was sad and disturbing and very well acted and portrayed. Penn and Walken were riveting in their performances, Sadly, I was only 1 of 4 other people at the screening.

I thought it was award-winning worthy but that it got passed over in the '80s as it was precluded by the horrible movie "Shanghai Surprise" starring Penn and his then wife, Madonna. She (Madonna) was not in "At Close Range" but she did the title song "Live to Tell" and the general viewing public tuned out thinking it would be another snoozer.

Yes I have seen and I thought it was excellent. As you say, it's not light viewing. It definitely does not glorify a life of crime!
