People have evolved to be that way because it is adaptive. The worthwhileness of life is totally a matter of perception. If a miserable person decides that life is meaningless, and a happy one decides every day is a blessing, neither one is necessarily right or wrong. It depends on the persons perception, which is a function of their situation in life (Palestinian vs. rich American) and their brain chemistry (a depressive vs. someone with an hyperactive thyroid).

I think some people understand that they do not have to be controlled by circumstances. To a materialist, HAVING is more important than BEING. Materialism practiced only by the immature. Pain digs through the veneer of our dreams and touches our souls. And every time a soul is seared with the throbbing pain of reality -- that soul has a choice to mature or retreat further into unreality. Some people choose to embrace the pain with the pleasure and try to appreciate both. Others flee pain and run to further gratification of their senses.
Maturity is the continual embracing of reality -- as it is revealed. Truly, pleasure is no better than pain -- both are tools in the hands of a master Soulsmith. Those on the path to maturity can be positive in adversity -- they do not fear pain or sorrow or trouble because they know it has a purpose.

Having an eye for the ridiculous and laughing it off. A sense of humor. The right to feel good. The right to enjoy each fleeting moment when things are really bad, sad or tragic. Thus, we recover faster, even though we can still hurt, still panic, cry until there is nothing left to cry... we laugh again. We see the smile of a child. We see the squirrel scurrying up a tree. We smell the tea cup rose with no distraction from the mind. We are hyper aware of the ground, the sky, and everything around us that our problems just simply seem insignificant.

Going thru tough times teaches a person to have a great spirit. Think about it, if you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth, you would probably expect everything to go your way. When you don't get your way, you would act like a spoiled brat. Therefore, you could never take 'no' for an answer.
Optimistic people know that they can't get everything they want all the time, so the only they can have is hope! Thru their experiences, they learn the value of hard work.

Could be because they have a better support system and they know for sure that they'll be ok.
The correct answer to your question, though, is temperament. To a great extent this is determined by heredity.
1. In a study that adds new insights to the nature vs. nurture debate, a University scholar has found that young monkeys reared by a mother other than their own are more likely to exhibit the behavior of their birth mothers rather than the behavior of their foster mothers.
The discovery of inheritability of social behavior traits among non-human primates has important implications for people as it reinforces other research that suggests that such characteristics as sociability and impulsive aggressiveness among humans may have a genetic basis, said Dario Maestripieri, Associate Professor in Human Development. Maestripieri’s work with the monkeys may help other researchers understand the biological origins of characteristics that promote socialization among humans, he said.
2. Trends in Biological Theory
Like many aspects in the measurement of human differences, the study of personality has come full circle. The ancient beliefs about the inheritability of personal characteristics was replaced with more modern theories of environment, socialization, parenting styles, and sexuality. Today, biological components of personality are again gaining influence as more advanced medical techniques are developed. New discoveries such as those propelling DNA studies are fairly new but they open up a whole new area of knowledge in the relationship of genetics and personality.
It is doubtful that we will be able to quantify the biological components of our personality. Like all areas of psychology, absolutes are few and far between, and it is impossible to completely eliminate subjectivity. We are, however, focused again on the role of biology, and even evolution, as we continue to explore the development of human personality.

You have to believe that you can overcome a problem before you can go and overcome it. If you just sit around pitying yourself then you will get nothing done. Life is harsh, every last one of us has or will have bad days, weeks, maybe even years. You just got to keep your head up and press on. I have no doubt that at the end of my life I will be proud of who I am and what I have been able to do with my life. Sure I will have some hard times but I will get pass them.
Some people have faith some use will-power and other say they are lucky.
For me it's a whole lot of faith mixed with a whole lot of will-power, and I'll take all the lucky breaks I can get.

One thing is that they are aware of the reallity that things are as likely to get better as they are to get worse, and they've learned if they hope for better and things don't improve they are strong enough to deal with the disappointment because they've had a lot of practice.
Also, many people choose not to allow their problems to define who or what they are as individuals. They do not allow their illness or financial woes or worries about a wayward child define them or take more from them than such problems already have.
Finally, a lot of problems can give a person perspective on what's important in life.

So, up with optimism!!

They don't have any other choice. There are other people depending on them and they can't afford a negative attitude. Also they are aware that it could be worse. I think that whoever deals with his problems and manages to be open minded and optimistic, is a strong person.

Some people have learned that from their parents. Others are just naturally calm and optimistic people. My attitude has always been that when you're down there is only one way to go, and that's up.
