We have been in Tolon/Nafplio/Corinthe area in Eastern Peloponnese 3 weeks May last year, and 1 week in Scafidia to see Olympia in September.
This year, last week May + first week June, we would like to visit the popular places along Messiniakos & Lakonokos Gulf with eventually Monemvasia.
Anybody has explored this area? Flying in to Kalamata, or using ferries from...? Is Kythera usefull as a base with ferry connections to most of the popular destinations like Kalamata, Gythio and Monemvasia?
Not an easy one, I know..

Kythera is not a good idea (it is a bad one) for a base. Its not close to Kalamata as you imagine and the connection is not so frequent to allow it as use for a base (personal opinion).
The best place to stay could be Kardamyli (very very beautifull) in order to explore southwest Peloponnese (kalamata, Pylos etc)
For the southeast it is a "must" to stay in the area of Mani (great place) preferably in Vathia, Areopoli or Gerolimenas (some of the characteristic villages) or somewhere near.
If you go to Monembasia (YOU HAVE TO trust me) find a room inside the small island-castle , it will be an experience.
Dont forget to go to see the ruins of Mistra near Sparta (home and birthplace of the Last Emperor of the Byzantine Empire).
Another idea is to visit the beautifully mountain villages in central peoloponnese like Stemnitsa and Dimitsana

I could write many more things, look in greek tourism sites you will find even more destination down there.
Greetings from Greece

I haven't been to that particular area, but I did travel to Mani last year, which was absolutely incredible. I think I may have gotten bored with more than three or four days there, though.

Three months in Greece, and Mani was one of my two favorite spots in the country (the other being a rural village on the island of Crete called Provarma).

If the areas you're talking about are anything close to Mani, expect to see real, actual Greece, rather than the touristy-type areas in Athens and some of the islands.

Do not miss Methoni and Koroni on the western leg. If in Methoni, stop to say hi to the Mayor there Hercules, a friend of mine. He's a Greek-American engineer who spent a lot of time in San Jose Calif.

Kalamata is renowned for its Poytanes and its virgin olive oil. The two go hand in hand. Only the poytanes are virgin in the left ear
