because it's something they are judged on.
They are the key to college admission, which is the key to an education, which is the key to a good job, which is the key to money, which is supposedly the key to happiness.
While the above isn't completely true, it's still the logic that present in today's culture.

I don't know, but it is a wonderful obsession for kids to have..
obsessed with good grades, too bad each and every child in today's society don't have this obsession...
Maybe it is because they want to succeed in life and make their parents ever so proud of them...

Because gold stars and smiley faces DO NOT get you into college, hun!
Kids need a B average to get a scholarship to get into college. Nobody can actually afford college, so they need scholarships, student loans, grants, etc.. And the only way to get those is to have GOOD GRADES. Sad but true :-(

Coming from a 6th graders perspective it is important to be successful and not be at Achne School of Welding instead of Harvard. When I get an A it gives me an upbeat kind of feeling, I want to brag to te universe, and most of all I know I am one step closer to a great job, salary, life and most importantly Harvard.

kid are obsessed with their grades because they assume it is the ONLY way to be successful and to suceed in life, to them good grades=better college=money making job=a better way of life...
