I've heard and read in lots of places that breast fed babies poop less than formula fed babies because of what an efficient, low-residue diet breast milk is. And during those months when babies are starting to eat more solids, stools start becoming more solid and take longer to make their way to the diaper.
That said, it happened to my son a few times at that age and it upset me too that the doctor seemed so nonchalant. I found that juices did help soften my boy's stools but they didn't make him go any faster. Warm baths followed by gentle tummy massages and 'bicycling' his legs seemed to work though. I never tried rubbing his anus with the rash cream, but I've rubbed puppies and kittens with warm, wet washrags and that works! so maybe there's something to it, haha. :)

Do you feed him infant cereal? It's not uncommon for that to cause constipation. There are a lot of solid foods that can cause it. If he's eating cereal, you might want to ease up on the amount he eats, and increase foods like prunes and apples. You can give him some watered down juices, also.
If he seems to be straining or crying when he tries to have a bowel movement, or if he's not producing 6 or more wet diapers a day, you may need to ask the doctor for his recommendation for a OTC constipation aid.
I would also avoid using Karo syrup. The sugar content can be very dangerous for infants.

If the prunes don't work try apple juice. That worked with my son. Just a lil though and mix it with some water or your gonna have a mess..lol. If that doesn't work i would consider going to the doctor again.. or maybe get a second opinion from a different doctor. He might be constipated and that isn't good for him.

5 days is a long time. call your dr back or get another dr. you can give water. they extra hydration can help. but honestly if prunes haven't worked in 5 days, you need medical intervention. of course he's cranky, my belly would hurt too. have you tried pears? this works better than prunes for my daughter.

WOW!! That's crazy, my son was having problems at one time 3 days would be the longest he would go before having a BM. Things I would use to help him out would be (1) a hot bath with this stuff called "equate Oatmeal bath treatment" (2) baby laxatives (3) If all else fails I would put my wife's 3rd grade picture in front of him, and let it scare the crap out of him!! No lie , that picture could peel paint, scare a gay man straight, it could even HAUNT a HOUSE!! HA! Need a photo? you could find it at www.gottttttttttt. damnnnnnnnnnnn. she's scary!!!

Generally a juice that they are not used to will help. I would try pear or apple juice. MAKE SURE that you water it down about 1/2 water and 1/2 juice. Let him drink all that he will driink. Hopefully this will work.
In other problems, for older children, we use 2 tablespoons of applecider vinegar in a cup of water. This helps to restore the stomach acid which causes stomach ache and diarreah.

First I would try a warm bath.
Second (and I know this is a gross one - but to my amazement it worked right away) try rubbing a little diaper rash cream on his bum right around the openning. My doctor told me it would stimulate the bum to make the poop come out and my baby pooped within 20 minutes.
Good Luck.

My doc told me to use a thermometer and take my babys temp (rectal) and it would stimulate her, my daughter went about 20 minutes later. You can try glycerin (ask your doc)...DON'T TRY THE CORN SYRUP...they say how bad that is for babies.
