No matter his age, he will soon become discouraged if he is corrected every time he writes a note or letter to you.
Find positive times to "teach" or reinforce correct spelling. Write letters or cards to people with him and go through the spelling with him as he writes them, for example, "lets write to Aunt Jane. What does that start with? What sound comes next?" Be positive and encouraging. Help him create accurate products rather than correct his efforts when he has done something out of love.

This might be a little long, bear with me please?

When I was having trouble spelling my mother would make up stories, fun songs, anything that turned learning into something exciting and new. Like the story of Greg Innis the Ant, whose mailbox spelled out G.I.ANT and terrified the other ants that a giant lived there. Little things like that help.

If you arn't the weird, but loveable and talented, linguist my mother is don't worry! It's somple to make things fun just always, no matter what happens praise him, correct him gently.

Set aside a time, or a game to be spelling, grab flashcards and board games that are language oriented like scrabble, jr. scrabble, etc. And have him copy things, where you write something and he just mimics it.

Also if you can get him to read, reading anything at all, even silly things like madlibs, comics, etc helps with word recognition.

Oh, and don't forget play to his interests! Does he like cartoons? Find out which characters, even if it seems odd and silly and have him do things involving spelling from his favorite shows. My mother made me learn how to spell the names of every transformer and my little pony forwards and backwards. And have him read to you as soon as he's able. I could reciet and spell all of Green Eggs and Ham before I could spell my own name. (It's tricky B-L-Y-S-S)

He should be evaluated for a learned disability. They are common, and if it is identified then he can learn how to work around it.

Also, make spelling a fun game of some sort.

Have him correct YOUR spelling and typos (like finding tim e in your Y!Answers question and saying it should be time). It will help give him confidence, and he'll probably think it's great fun to correct his grandparent.

How old is he? It is great the he is writing you notes! Some kids hate to write anything. Don't discourage him by criticizing and correcting his notes. Instead, buy him books that he would like to read since reading improves spelling. Also, tell his parents to talk to his teacher and see if there is anything they can do at home to boost his spelling skills.
