I have a pc windows xp, 1gb of ram , 80gig harddrive. Cable modem is running off an ethernet cord. 2.39GHz with sp2.

Go to radio shack and buy a filter. Runs around $8 and filters out small interference that will increase speed a little. Also see if they have shielded cables. That will help too.

Depend on the source of where you download them from. If the source is a dedicated web/ftp server, yes, it will increase your download speed. But if the source is a P2P connected PC, it may not increase the speed because it depend on the remote PC speed to their internet connection and usually P2P software also has ability to limit speed. In general, with bigger speed internet connection, you will have a faster download.

Run linux - All of my computers are "dual boot".

Some are Windows XP PRO and Ubuntu (www.ubuntu.com)

and the rest are Windows XP PRO and Kubuntu (www.kubuntu.com)

Whenever possible I use linux --- Internet runs faster, transfer of files across network - Faster.

and Ubuntu and Kubuntu are FREE
And you can use SAMBA (free also) to access Windows NFTS files.
