Last November 2005, I bought a plane ticket from Manila to San Francisco via Philippine Airlines. I paid more than $700.00. I am a Filipino American so I only took the one way ticket. However, if you are a tourist, you should be taking a round trip ticket. The price would depend on the season. Philippine Airlines has direct flight to San Francisco and Los Angeles daily which leaves Manila at around 10pm. There are cheaper airlines, however, you will have stop over somewhere.
Last June 2006, when I bought a ticket from Ventura County in California to Manila, it cost me $500.00++. It was also via Philippine Airlines. Most of the time they have a direct flight. However, there are instances that they stop over at Guam.

I just bought my ticket last night. I looked all over the net and calling travel agencies. Finally, the cheapest flight I found from LAX to Manila was $700+$240 of tax a total of $941. The flight is with Malaysia Air to Taiwan and a 2 hr layover from Taiwan to Manila. I got my ticket on Cheap Ticket.com. Good luck on your search.
