Basically, all human societies are built on a population based pyramid scheme. The younger people support and take care of the really old people. If there are more really old people than young people, the pyramid collapses.

Unfortunately, sooner or later, the whole thing will collapse, since the earth can support only so many people. It will probably be later, since there is still a lot of earth left. But the quality of life will go downhill long before the pyramid collapses completely.

Because, in the long term, populations in developed countries are shifting towards being older: As healthcare improves, more and more people are living to an older age, and because of career, they are generally having children later, if at all. When these people retire, they become economically inactive, and need to be replaced by a younger generation that supports them through service provision, payment of taxes, etc. If there's no younger population, or if the population is too small, the country's economy shrinks. This is called a Depression.
