I have been hearing different dates all my life that came and went.
The world is NOT going to end unless it gets hit by a gigantic meteor and is knocked out of orbit and crash lands on the sun. Other than that, I got work tomorrow. Life will go on and on and on..................

Chances of THE world ending any time soon are pretty slim. That's not likely to happen for many millions of years when the sun nears the end of it's life and begins a phase of expansion into a red giant. When this happens the sun will grow from it's current size and swallow all of the inner system planets Mercury, Venus, earth and Mars. This will be the true destruction of the earth.

Another possibility is that mankind somehow manages to create and lose control of a black hole. This would sink to the nearest gravitational centre (the centre of the earth) where it would continue to feed and grow before swallowing the entire planet. don't believe that we have the technology to do this yet, but once the new super Hadron Collider is completed at CERN there is a very small chance this could happen.

If you are talking about YOUR world ending and MANKINDS world ending, then this could happen at any point. Mutually assured nuclear annihalation, an extinction level asteroid strike, a super volcano erupting and plunging the planet into a nuclear winter, runaway green house effect raising the temperatures above humanly acceptable levels, Virulent artificial plague wiping out humanity, X-ray flare from a distant supernova.

Looking at it generally, the planet will survive most things, but us humans and our civilisations are a bit more fragile.

The Earth will die when the Sun passes of the main sequence and becomes a red giant, turning the Earth into a molten mass or even vapourising it. You've got some 500 million to 1.5 billion years before that happens.

honey, people have been predicting the end since biblical times. the dinosaurs even contemplated it. who cares? you've got today, right? you're worrying too much about it and wasting precious minutes? live it up!!! following lyrics courtesy of tracy chapman

If you knew that you would die today
Saw the face of god and love
Would you change?
Would you change?

If you knew that love can break your heart
When you're down so low that you cannot fall
Would you change?
Would you change?

How bad, how good, does it need to get?
How many losses? how much regret?
What chain reaction would cause an effect?
Makes you turn around
Makes you try to explain
Makes you forgive and forget,
Makes you change
Makes you change

If you knew that you would be alone
Knowing right, being wrong,
Would you change?
Would you change?

If you knew that you would find a truth
That would bring a pain that can't be soothed
Would you change?
Would you change?

How bad, how good, does it need to get?
How many losses? how much regret?
What chain reaction would cause an effect?
Makes you turn around
Makes you try to explain
Makes you forgive and forget,
Makes you change
Makes you change

Are you so up right
You can't be bent
If it comes to blows
Are you so sure you won't be crawling
If not for the good why why risk falling
Why risk falling?

If everything you think you know
Makes your life unbearable
Would you change?
Would you change?

If you'd broken every rule and vow
And hard times come to bring you down
Would you change?
Would you change?

If you knew that you would die today,
If you saw the face of God and loved
Would you change?
Would you change?

If you saw the face of God and loved
If you saw the face of God and loved
Would you change?
Would you change?

Unless scientific evidence provides that a catastrohpic disaster will happen, I'd take those beliefs with a grain of salt.
