I'm traveling with friends through France, Italy, and Spain. We will be using the train a lot and staying at hostels so I would like to have a light load to carry but don't know the best way to go about that.

Check out Rick Stebves website - nhe has some good bags at http://travelstore.ricksteves.com/catalog/index.cfm?fuseaction=catalog&parent_id=8
he goes to Europe every year and has great exerience in this area - he'll tell you what to pack and what you need. I also recommend his "Europe through the Back Door" book for that kind of information.
Enjoy your trip!

I'm so envious! Your trip sounds like so much fun!

I would suggest you take the largest, comfortable backpack you can find. Typically, the ones you see on travel shows where they have metal back supports and straps around your waist. I recommend this type of luggage, because it's easy, fast, reliable, and accessible. Even if you're taking a train and staying in hostels, you don't want to have to worry about rolling your luggage on cobblestone or uneven pavement. Also, if it rains (which I hope it doesn't!), dragging your luggage behind you means your luggage gets soaked. If your belongings are on your back, you can easily unhook the easily accessible umbrella hanging from your gear and keep everything dry. I would recommend that you don't bring anything expensive like Louis Vuiton or designer luggage of any kind. This makes you stand out like a sore thumb and it's possible you could run into trouble.

Most women travel into Europe bringing the best of everything they own so they fit in with the "ultra-stylish" Europeans, but the truth is most just wear darker, well-fitting clothes. So, you can pack light in your trusty gear and load it onto your back while your friends are dragging their luggage everywhere.

Hoping you have SOO much fun -
