Does anyone know of any environmental enrichment that can be used for cows that are in tie stalls? I am a veterinary student and am concerned about one of our calves that has recently been moved from a regular stall to a tie stall & is not taking it well. I am familiar with enrichment items (for horses) that can be placed in normal stalls, but I cannot think of anything for a tie stall...

(I'd also like to point out that I do not agree with the viewpoint that cows = food only. I personally do not eat animals. I also believe that once you work with cows on an intimate level, you will see that they have very distinct personalities and deserve the best life you can provide them. I would appreciate if you would take this into consideration before answering.)

Anyway, I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

Horse items are safe for calves and cows too. When we have to tie our calves we hang a rubber dog ball with a jingle bell in it from their halter- my calves enjoy picking it up and shaking it to hear the jingle and then dropping it so it hits the ground and bounces up again. Also a lot of calves love squeeky toys. My brother use to tie little bells to one of his calves legs and the calf would sit there and paw with his hoof to hear the bells.
But my calves love the rubber jingle bell ball. Maybe yours will too.
