Same thing happened to me. The bricks have sucked up moisture from the ground. I had a brick layer come and replace the badly damaged bricks and scrape out the old mortar and replace with new mortar. If your damage is not too bad, try and rectify the problem and divert the water away from the area before it costs you heaps.

I would say weathering due to the presence of moisture/mositure damage
