Energy is the biggest business on the planet, and oil is a huge part of that business. No modern country can functtion without oil flowing freely into it every minute of every day. This kind of dependance and that much money combine to shape policy more than any other issue. No politician dares cross big oil, get in its way, slow it down, or even really question it. All modern countries are like cocaine addicts for oil, and will do anything for it or to get it. Influence is too tame a word for what oil does. Just look at the US in the Middle East today and you can see just one example.
