Reservation has been applied for a long period in many States. In the Centre, both in admission and in recruitment, it is going to be introduced in a big way. The anguish of the so called forward communities on the shrinking job opportunities cannot be understated. These classes do admit that there is a case for reservation for the SC/ST. Classification of the OBC is a grey area. There is a very thin line of delineation and demarcation between the OBCs and the others. Even they may grudgingly stomach reservation to these classes. But, it must be made clear that it shall be for a fixed period. If reservation cannot achieve the desired goal, within a stipulated period, it should be admitted, reservation is not the right mode of levelling the society. If it achieves the goal, again, there would be no more need for continuing with the exercise.

If you are talking about Higher Education such as Universities in America, unless you are a white male you get special consideration, and being a white female is only one step better than being a white male, all other ethnic races get more consideration for college applications here because they are "different" and they get reserved spots in a supposed effort to create "diversity" in the learning environment, Age is the newest "diversity group". I think everyone should be considered equally based on hard work, and good grades, but then again, no one in authority to change the rules here has ever asked me my opinion. The only exceptions to the white male/female rule is if they are exceptional athletes, but that goes for any ethnic background, athletes seem to revered above all others here in the US.

The word "backward" you used itself tells us that those people are pushed back in all respects by our ancestors for many centuries. Besides, women were also greatly suppressed in our society in the past ages. Even though the government is providing them reservations, they still are not coming out of their cocoons to grab those opportinities. 55 years may not be sufficient to change their mindset. It may take another half a century for them to fully utilize the facilities provided by the government. Until then we have to wait with patience.
Still millions of tribals are there without even touching the borders of civilization. They are also our fellow Indians. Let us give them a share from our chunk to uplift them. Once they are uplifted, there will not be any need for reservation.
It is like taking extra classes for those students who could not understand the lesson in the regular class. Those who have understood the lesson in the regular class need not dispute with this.

The fact that they are backward, calls for their upliftment, thus the reservation. Unless they are also lifted up India will be called underdeveloped or developing country, and I do not like either term for India. I also do not like reservations for the creamy layer within the backward class.
