A flash drive in todays technology is not only impractical but much too expensive. Flash memories are quick performers once the data is written in the module however writing times are considerably slower than HDDs making them less than an ideal choice for a permanent physical disk or as a ram substitute (which Vista will allow).

So to answer your question the advantages of a flash drive are this: The speed in which the data can be READ. The memory is non-volotile which means it isnt sensitive to magnetic intereference. Additionally the memory is solid state which means there are no moving parts. This means data corruption is non existent when put into physically violent situations.

Well be specific with the question.. What exactly is 2 paragraphs to you?

Anyhow flash drives usually can withstand a lot of shock and tend to be very hard to break compared to hard disks because flash doesn't have any moving parts.

They also use less power from what I heard but the difference is not too much.

Right now flash technology is just beginning and personally I'd rather go for a external hard drive as flash drives are still expensive with the current space/$$ ratio.

The main advantage of flash drive over hard disk is that flash drives do not have any moving parts to wear out. Hard drives store their data on platters which spin at a very fast rate when you access them. There are also parts that move to read and write data to different parts of the platters. If any one of these moving parts breaks, the drive is basicly dead. With flash drive, it's all memory chips and circuit boards. Another advantage is that the access times on most flash drives made today is way faster than even a good hard drive. A final advantage is that flash drives are silent whereas you have some vibration sounds with hard drives.

Flash is tipically faster than a normal external harddrive. Windows vista(and maybe others) can be set to use extra memory on a flash device as ram. Harddrives would hold more data
