Over the past 50 years, Seattle has had "The Queen City (because of Queen Anne Hill), "The Jet City" (because of Boeing Aircraft Company) and now "The Emerald City" because of the supposed greenery of the city even though most of the green is closer to the Cascades and Olympic Mountains.
In reality, not many people in the city are calling it "The Emerald City," mostly just businesses trying to attract customers and tourists. I still hear people on the radio occasionally calling it "The Jet City."

In Canada we have Cowtown (Calgary); "Hogtown" or "TO" for Toronto; "Van" or "Lotus Land" for Vancouver; "Edmonchuck" (refering to Edmonton's large ethnic Ukrainian community); "Winterpeg" for Winnipeg; "Prince" for Prince George; "Rocky" for Rocky Mountain House; "Head of the Lake" for Thunder Bay; and "Steel Town" for Hamilton. I am sure there are many many more. Oh, yes . . . "Ukie" for Uklulete, as west coast village on Vancouver Island. Some call Newfoundland "The Rock" too. But Newfoundland of course is a province, not a city.
