No. The ATM machine is a convenience but not a necessity.
And we simply have to [ay for this convenience just as we do many others. You know up front there is a charge...you don't have to use it. You can go to the teller and make a cash withdrawal for free in the majority of banks. If you are charged a fee there, then I would change banks. I do pay 3.50 per month
which covers the cost of managing my checking account, balancing it, on-line access to microfilms. I have no problem with
that fee whatsoever.

As for savings, sure our money is invested and they make money off our money...but it is the bank's risk..not ours. And as long as they pay us interest, we don't loose anything.

I don't agree. I have never paid an ATM charge in my life -- but I always use an ATM supported by my bank. The banks make legitimate profits by supplying legitimate services; it costs money to have somebody go stuff an ATM with currency.

In the USA, usually you don't pay charges on withdrawing money from your account from your own bank. If you go to another bank to withdraw your money, then that bank will usually charge you a fee, but I think that is fair. You aren't that bank's customer, so why shouldn't they make something. You are free to choose if you want to pay the fee or go to your own bank.

If you are referring to Jack Layton of Canada, than I don't know how it works there.

But, generally speaking, I don't think the banks are ripping off customers. If you don't like paying certain fees, you can go to another bank or don't bank at all.

Unless, that is, you are not supposed to pay the bank at all, and it being a law, for services they provide.

If you want to pay less in fees, try a different bank.

You don't have to use ATMs if you don't want to pay for their services.

Those machines cost a lot of money and they need electricity.

In some locations the banks have to pay rent for the space used (Shopping Malls, Drugstores and so on)
