I have had depression for the last 5 years and am currently well controlled on antidepressants. I have tried on a few occasions to wean off the antidepressants, with poor results. I would like to have a family. I know the scientific/medical facts about PND. I want to hear from women who have faced the same situation.

sam, read the question.. I am not depressed - I have a condition called 'Major Depressive Disorder' aka Depression - but, as I said, I am well controlled on medication. SO, I am NOT currently depressed.
Its like diabetes - you take the medication and your sugar levels are normal - but you are still a 'diabetic' or a 'person with diabetes' and will be for the rest of your life or until a cure is found.

Sorry, when I put in the title 'already depressed' it was obviously misleading.
I am not currently suffering from any symptoms of depression.
I do not feel depressed. I want a family the same way any other person wants a family.
I am not doing it to complete my life or cure my depression. I am simply concerned that my past history will adversly affect my child.
I know the statistics - so no need to repeat them to me.

I will repeat my initial question: I would like to hear from those in similar circumstances

Postnatal depression (PND) is something that occurs after you have a baby. I had a bout of PND but with therapy I felt better but sometimes I still wish i was pregnant. Miss the attention I guess.

I think that just becasue you live with depression, which is well controlled, doesn't automatically mean you'll have PND. My mother suffers long term depression, which is controlled, just like you, and she never had PND. Though at least you're thinking about it now so if it does happen you can have some strategies in place to deal with it.
You will need to talk to your Dr about the affect your medication may have on your baby in utero.
Good luck

Having a child is a really major decision. Going through depression is also a major experience. Now put the two together can be catastrophic. When you have a baby at first it is hard then as they get older their problems get larger. Now with your problems on top of that only god knows.
Then again things could be great. Talk to your Dr. Talk to your husband. Talk to all you can and make sure you are up to it. It is a hard thing to be objective when you want something so badly. Just take your time. Good Luck

Yea, having kid is a good idea but not yet. You gotta be mentality and physically ready for it, if not it wouldn't be a good thing to do. No one will want any unnecessary depression, and in your situation, having kid can burden you. The chances of it being a solution to your condition is very, very low. Solve your problem now, it may be hard but you just gotta do it. Then only you think of a family. Don't get everything into a big mess. At least, when you have your 1st child, he/she is gonna be a lucky one and you'll be a good mum also. Take care.

PLEASE talk to your own Doctor about this situation ... for there is no way that this question can be answered here.

I do know that having a baby (when you have difficulties elsewhere in life) is NOT a cure-all, fix-all for any of the problems, for the BABY is VERY STRESSFUL ... and ... unlike a piece of paper ... the child is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY for the next 18 years of your life (a very long time, and take it from me, a long term single mom -- parenting a child through the Teenage years is VERY Difficult/Stressful ... especially when their hormones are raging (which is all the time!)).

Ok. I've searched everywhere, and I've read everything. The best thing to do would be to slowly lower your doses (with doctor permission of course) or switch to a different, less addicting drug. Because if you want a child, your best bet is to be med free (if possible). If it's not possible, your child will have some risk of a disease. It might be a small chance, but is it worth it to try to wean off of them? I think so.

Hey there just ignore the idiots that have no idea what you have gone thru with these meds or what they do. I was on them while preg just a lower dose and my kids are fine and I have 6. No problems at all. Just some of them you should not be on thru the first trimester. Talk to your doctor and he can clear this up for you sweetie, but you have no worries. Good luck and God Bless!!!

I think that if you work with your Dr very closely, you can continue on your meds and that should help with PND. Not all women get it, some are mild cases. For myself, I found that it took me longer to get out of it than I expected, but it was a mild case. Good luck with your decision.
