I'm trying to figure out how to count syllables in a short poem. I have it as 2 right now but am not positive.

I know it has 1 syllable in the dictionary as far as dividing a word goes. But pronunciation can vary, thanks.

Well, I know what the dictionary says, but when I pronounce "wire", it's 2 syllables. I find it almost impossible to pronounce it as one syllable. When I do, it sounds southern-ish: "wahr".

But I think for the purpose of poetry, you can treat it as either, depending on what works best. If it is rhyming, I can't think of any one count word to rhyme, (although the closest might be (em)pire -- pire seems easy to get in one count), but lots of 2 count words, buyer and flyer, along with fire, tire, etc.

One. "R" is a strong letter and warps the vowel in front of it, but that vowel still has only one sound.

May I suggest you look into a phonics course. It will help you not be thrown off by the "bossy r" or regional variations in pronunciation. "wire" follows the rule: vowel, consonant, silent e--the vowel will be long.

Also, ow/ou and oy/oi are considered one syllable, I believe (ask your teacher). Even though you hear two vowel sounds, they follow the rules for one syllable. Also, you can divide a word between syllables, but you would never divide boy bo-y or how ho-w. Likewise, house is one syllable; it's not ho-use. Where would you divide wire? Wi-re?

If in doubt, look it up in a dictionary. It's a pain, I know, but dictionaries show where words are divided. There is also a reference book that only shows where words are divided (no pronunciation guides or definitions), which is easier to use.

Another way to tell: a syllable is a word or part of a word that has only one vowel sound. One vowel can only make one vowel sound, technically speaking. The two sounds you hear are between the w and the r, where there is only one vowel--so it counts as one vowel sound.

The problem is the warping caused by the r. L does the same thing, but to a lesser degree.

I pronounce it with two, but I could be wrong. That is just how I say it. If you are writing a poem, just pronounce it the way the poem flows.
