My friend left my other friend the key to his house while he went on vacation with his family. our friend had ppl over at the house for about 20 minutes one of which was me. Both of my friends are minors, i am 18. My friends mom found out that we were there and is threatening to sue (my friend and i, not her own son), because her computer broke (although we didnt touch it). She says she lost her work from her phd (lie) and wants to sue for her 6 yr tuition to the university. Can she really sue for the tuition or is she just ****** crazy??? Because when i posted this question b4 i was told that we couldn't b sued at all.

She's crazy...she'd have to prove that you broke the computer first of all. The dman things break all the time for no reason whatsoever, and unless she hires some expert who can testify in court that you and your friend did something that broke the computer, she has no cause of action. Highly unlikely! As for the problem with her lost paper...she can't sue you for the full tuition because she's received other benefits (class credit, the knowledge she's pick up in class, etc.) from the university, so you haven't taken anything from her but the time she supposedly spent writing this paper, which, unless she's some type of freak, she didn't keep track of, and therefore can't prove her damages with any certainty. And what would she say her time is worth? It's not like she was being paid for her effort. Any future earnings she expects to gain because she has a PhD are too speculative to quantify. Besides which, I seriously doubt she doesn't have a rough draft of the paper printed out and floating around somewhere, perhaps in her advisor's office. If she can't prove her damages, there's nothing to sue for! I wouldn't worry too much unless you get a copy of the complaint from a process server. I don't know any lawyer who would take her case.
