As far a settlement goes.

There was a shortage of land in the 15th century. Spain, Europe and France were constantly competing (fighting, scheming, forming and breaking alliances) with one another, so they all had to get a piece of the action. In the 15th century England was out of the picture but Spain was in Central and South America, France in Canada.

Economic conditions. Inflation caused the poor to become poorer and the rich richer. Example, bankers, landlords etc had excess capital to invest. Poor fieldworkers were forced to look for food in the city as the demand for help decreased. So they became indentured servants to pay off debts, hoping to earn freedom dues and make a living for themselves in the "New World"

Primogeniture. The younger sons of nobles inherited nada. They would have to join the Army, Clergy or hope that the King or their brother would provide for them. Why not go and govern a colony?

And of course the countries leaders hoped to gain money. Silver, timber, furs etc. They would import goods to the colonies and export goods as well.

It really was about money. It had very little to do with religion. It was a secondary motive in the Spainards minds.

The three G's
Gold - people who found/ claimed new lands got rich fast, and new trade routs.
Glory - who doesnt know Columbis still today?
God- many set out to convert the "pagans" to catholosism/ christianity.

Prince Henry the navigator:
From portugal, sponsored many explorations to all around
Thanks to Prince Henry, By 1500 portugal controlled all gold flow into Europe.
Spain:
ferdinand and isabella - sponsored columbis and many other voyages due to revenue generated by New world posessions(after columbis) and victory over Turks at Lepento in teh medeterrainan (Dictated all medeterrainan trade.)

Explorers
Bartholomew Diaz:Sailed to cape of good hope (south tip of Aferica) and theorized that it was possible to go to india but he ran out of supplies
Vasco Degamma: actually went to India around aferica, returned with a bunch of spices ( which meant he was instantly rich and found the new trade route for Europe because Spain & Turks had the monopoly)
Columbis - 1492 sailed to Americas but thought he was in teh phillipenes, Italian but sponsored by ferdinand and isabella.
Magellan- first to circum nagigate the globe (sailed around the globe) but magellan himself died somewhere in the phillipenes.

Hope this helps.

Spice, spice, and more spice because the easy road to India was cut off. If they wanted to get there they had to go around Africa and that wasn't very easy or productive.
