I have the same problem. I can't 'small-talk' and when there is a group of people chatting away I'm usually sitting there saying 'uh-huh'. I don't know the answer, but I'd say go to things where you are supposed to make friends. For example, sign up for an exercise class or a knitting class. When you do meet up with a group of people, find ones similar to yourself and ask lots of questions. Find a reason to invite a few of them out. For example, if you find out its their birthday, tell them you want to bring them out to lunch or something. Or if you find out they like hiking, ask them to go on a hike. One thing that prevents me from making friends is I don't want to give up time or money for them. But I guess I have to learn to give a little!!

i am shy but i know when not to be shy. when u talk with new people, (u probably know this already) try to find a common ground. then elaborate on that.
some tips to have in mind:
-be more outgoing (being social is not something u learn over night)
-talk more with ur friends (u need to be comfortable with the way u talk)
-change ur outfit (this may or may not pertain to u but for some ppl it lifts their selfconfidence)

This has worked for me when I moved to a new state & it worked for my daughter at her new school. Have a happy attitude, & say hello to people you don't know. People like being around positive people so smile alot & be friendly with everyone. It might take a few days but you'll get a reputation for being the nice lady
