OMG!!! i was just thinking of that exact same thing. Ok The answer is the reason why tennis players make those stupid grunting noises is because they are aiming for a power shot. I think Serena Williams grunts funny but i'm sick of it all of the time. It gets stuck in my head.

I guess from the effort of hitting shots that hard....and I think many players believe the grunting helps them hit harder....I find it rather distracting at times....I mean there are times when Maria Sharapova sound like she's having sex right there on the court (and it doesn't involve me--damn!! Sorry.)...I could really do without the sound effects, though.

Not all tennis players do it. I found myself doing it once, And it was very hard to stop but I eventually did. I guess you could say that it is not something you really think about !

Have you ever swung at a ball going 80m.p.h.? It literally hits them hard as they sing it back. give them a break for releasing their effort in the form a grunt.

Common sense it's so they release their energy when hit the ball to make a harder impact when swinging the tennis racket. Its just like in karate when you punch, or kick.

tell me about it. especially that russian lady. once she was playing this other groaning lady and it was soooo annoying. aparently not many of the players do it during practice, i think they do it mostly to try and put off their opponent

Because they're straining their diaphragm to get more air into their lungs to keep their blood oxygenated and maintain their endurance.
