The Soviets were actually the first to photograph it with an orbiter.
It has more craters and they're evenly distributed - not like the side we can see, which has large dark areas (the "Man in the Moon") with almost no craters.

BTW the responder who said it doesn't "get as much light" is wrong. When the moon is in its New phase, the side we see is pointed towards us and the "Far Side" is pointed directly at the sun.
In the moon's 28 day orbit aound us, both sides get an equal amount of sunlight.

Heavily cratered like the Earthside, but the Moon is tidally locked to the Earth, always presenting the same (heavier) hemisphere to us, which is denser and contains a greater proportion of Titanium, as compared with the Farside, which contains more Aluminium compounds.

It kind of looks like the side of the moon we can see but just maybe sometimes darker because the light does not hit it.
