While we had a common enemy in Hitler's Nazi Germany, we weren't exactly friendly even during WWII. In fact, in 1945, General Patton wanted to kick them completely out of Berlin and continue pushing the Russians back into Russia. Diplomatic pressures would not allow this and he was ordered not to advance toward Berlin or confront the Russians.
Although not a true documentary, rent the movie "Patton" with George C. Scott and you'll get a fairly accurate idea of what happened.

All of the comments about a common enemy are true. However, we should remember that Russia and Nazi Germany had a non-agression treatry with each other until Germany attacked them. The Russians were gobbling up land that Germany did not want. Who knows what would have happened if Germany had not attacked them?

Because in the following years we were in constant competition with them, the race to space, the nuclear race to build a better bomb, they became a super power as we were and it was scary; tensions ran high, the cold war began and finally deminished. We never went to war over it; but a revalation came about that if we ever did goto war chances were the world would be destroyed. So we found a way to cut the tension and the iron curtain fell.
Hows that...

I think that you are looking for something known as "friends of the moment". They had a bigger enemy at that time so they teamed up to defeat it. Once that danger was over, they no longer had need to be allies. It's really that simple.

They had a common enemy, Nazi Germany. However, they had different political ideologies. With each considering the other one a threat, they started the "Cold War".

Similar to our relationship with Iraq in the '80s, we didn't like them after they were done fighting with Iran.

42-45 had an obviously evil joint enemy, after that the differing political systems could not coexist.
