Yes, you do your chart based on your actual date and time of birth. With that info, you will learn that there is much more to it, than just your Sun Sign. There are many planets, and signs in certain houses at your time of birth.
It's like taking a pie-divide it into twelve pieces, then flavor each one individually. That is why no two people of the same Sign will be exactly alike, and some may be nothing like their Sun sign, especially if their Ascendant/Venus/Mars/ or Moon sign is strongly aspected.

I think that you should follow the day you were born because even though you should have been born a month earlier, you don't exactly know the date... And besides you were born on the day you were born and not a month earlier so your astrological traits would be for the date you were born.

Technically, astrology goes by the actual birthday not by the due date. So therefore if you were supposed to be a Cancer but were born a Gemini, you are a Gemini.
However, I do have a theory that it is possible to take on characteristics of both. It's not proven though.

You were born when you were to be born. Not all predictions of due dates are accurate. I know, I'm a pediatric nurse.
So, go by the date/time/year you were born for your predictions.
