Once I had a lot of aphids on my plants. I asked professionals what to do about them. They told me to wait and see if Lady Bugs showed up in a couple of days. Sure enough they did and they ate all the aphids.

It is possible that you are the lucky host to an Asian type of ladybug,we have these here they were indeed released by our "friendly DNR" to counteract the over abundance of Blackfly larva that they released to counteract the Gypsy Moths that are killing every Oak tree insight.....
The only thing I have seen in relation to this is to put a piece of Apple near the area where they seem to be balling up, and then remove Apple when Ladybugs move to this.
I would think Apple piece need be in a small container of some type(old sour cream, butter, type)

If they are truly lady bird beetles, they are in their winter "dormancy." They will congregate in large masses over winter.......why, nobody knows. They aren't eating, they aren't mating, they are just hanging out. Some survivial instinct we don't quite understand. Just let them be. Come spring they'll fly off.

There are other insects that look somewhat like lady bird bettles, so best to get an ID from the extension agent.

Lady bugs ar natural pest deterrent. They eat Aphids. The come from eggs. You can sell them but first you'll need to catch them. Natural farmers will pay $$$ for them. They ar better that insectasides.

lady bugs as you say are in fact in the beetle family. yes they are released as beneficial insects out on the researchers land crops in stead of them using harmful pesticides ( now isn't that wonderful news ?) they eat harmful pests like stated in the above answer with aphids. you can buy them from a nursery as well for this reason. they are carnivores and dint usually eat plants themselves. however there is one problem with them if you find them in your home during winter months that is a sign of wood decay from water damage in your home. they are used as an indicator insect as when you see them around, you know certain others harmful insects are out there too eating our prized plants .. ouch !!
