In the USA, we are doing a pretty good job with the traditional civil rights issues - race, religion, gender, age, disability, ethnicity, and color. that does not mean we are perfect, but the courts have done a good job defending people who have been discriminated against for these non-merit factors.
We have a way to go on legal acceptance of homosexuals, though we have made great strides there. And, our nation-wide despising of immigrants is shameful.
I would write about immigration - not all immigrants are illegal, and those who are seem mostly to just want to get work and go home when they are finished.
