muscle spasm will not cause you lifetime pain, normally a few days of rest should relieve you, since it has persisted this long, go back to your doctor, something else may be wrong...

If you exercise and follow proper lifting/bending techniques, your back will probably be okay unless there is something wrong with it structurally (that can be seen in an x-ray or MRI) I have suffered from back problems since I was 17. I have been laid up for several weeks at a time from acute spasms and more recently, bulging discs, but I have not always been good to my back. When I was working out regularly and in really good physical shape, I never had problems with my back. It always happens when I'm out of shape and stressed out.
There are so many factors. How old are you? Are you active or sedentary? Do you eat a healthy diet and drink lots of water? Have you been given a program to strengthen your abs and trunk so your back will not be so strained? Are you seeing a chiropractor, massage therapist or other body worker or are you going to a regular MD or orthopedist? How is your mental health, aside from the back pain? Are you under a lot of stress, or did stress cause the injury? It is very hard to deal with depression when you are in pain. I know that nearly every time I have hurt my back badly, I thought I would never be able to work again, and that is a real fear. So you're in pain AND depressed.
The last time I had a muscle spasm I was in tears and could barely roll over, get dressed, sit or drive without screaming. The MD gave me a shot of something into the muscle and a prescription for pain/muscle relaxers. It took several weeeks for me to feel like moving around, but I have small children and you can't lie around recouperating when you have little ones. The slightest thing can cause the muscles to cramp up again.
I don't know where you live, but if you are in an urban area you should be able to find alternative healers, other opinions, or even classes for strengthening your back. I realise that all this is tempered by money, insurance, etc, and whether or not you can afford some of these things. Go to the library, look up back pain online at the various medical websites, and ask around. Take care of yourself, and good luck.

There must be something causing the muscles to spasm if it has been a month and a half....I would strongly suggest that you go back to the doc and investigate this further with an MRI. You should not be in pain for the rest of your life, you just need to find out what is really going on so it can be properly treated.

I've had muscle spasms in both my upper and lower back, and it's never taken any more than a few days for the pain to subside. Using some kind of support bandage would help to alleviate some of the pain, sports rub creams help too. Did your doctor give you any pain medication, or a muscle relaxant? Ask him/her for refills on the pain medication, if it's still painful. Muscle spasms are a temporary malady, not a lifetime ailment.

Not usually, but a month and a half is too long. See your Dr. again and get him or her to prescribe physical therapy, medication, and stretching exercises. You may also evaluate the quality of your bed and the chair you use for work. If your back hurts as soon as you get out of bed or the chair, you need to consider replacing either or both of them. Good luck.
