This is not an easy task. If you have no problem with reading what smarter men have advised, you could start with the Dalai Lama's book or Cd, " How to see yourself as you really are."
Ask your mother who she sees when she looks at you. Discussion would follow. You can't help but gain insight.
Examine your motivation. Where do you find bliss?

Just be. You are what you are and THAT is your true self. You are not 'meant to be' some great Savior of mankind if you sit around your apartment watching cartoons. A great writer is not 'who you truly are' if you never write anything. Stop worrying about getting to the true self. You are already your true self. A puppy is not going to be a mustang once it 'finds itself' it's a puppy. It is, however and ever changing thing. That puppy may grow up to be a dog. And when it does, its true self will be a grown up dog.

Salvador Dali used to say, "I am not a surrealist. I am surreal" Don't try to be something. You are something.

I find that reading what God's perspective and priorities are (Bible) on a daily basis really transforms my mind and my stress levels in a healthy way.
When I do that, and take the time to pray for myself and others, I like who I am the rest of the day much better.
When I lose this focus, I notice a tendency to be much more self-centered, worried & anxious, and have a lot less to give to others.
The Psalms can be really nice when I'm not sure where I want to read.
Good question by the way, I hope this helps.

You can get to true self by being totally honest with yourself. You know yourself better than anyone. Stop following the herd and trying to pretend to be someone or something that you're not. For example, if some of your friends pretend to be cool by acting like jerks, don't go along with that just because you fear rejection.

In the immortal words of the Butthole surfers...

Mikey got with Sharon, Sharon got Sheriee
She was sharin' Sharon's outlook on the topic of disease
Mikey had a facial scar and Bobby was a racist
They were all in love with dyin' they were doin' it in Texas.

Tommy played piano like a kid out in the rain
then he lost his leg in Dallas he was dancin' with the train
They were all in love with dyin' they were drinkin' from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche coming down the mountain.

I don't mind the sun sometimes the images it shows
I can taste you on my lips and smell you in my clothes
Cinnamon and surgery and softly spoken lies.

You never know just how you look through other people's eyes.

Some will die in hot pursuit and fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit while sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche coming down the mountain.

I don't mind the sun sometimes the images it shows
I can taste you on my lips and smell you in my clothes
Cinnamon and surgery and softly spoken lies.

You never know just how you look through other people's eyes.

Another Mikey took a knife while arguing in traffic
Flipper died a natural death he caught a nasty virus
Then there was the ever-present football player rapist they were all in love with dyin' they were doin' it in Texas.

Paulie caught a bullet but it only hit his leg
While it should have been a better shot got him in the head
They were all in love with Diane they were drinkin' from a fountain
That was pouring like an avalanche coming down the mountain.

I don't mind the sun sometimes the images it shows
I can taste you on my lips and smell you in my clothes
Cinnamon and surgery and softly spoken lies.

You never know just how you look through other people's eyes.

Getting to the true self... Means never having to say you're sorry.

Or was that love? Or a Tampon Commercial? I keep forgetting...

either way, The way to the true self is not giving a rats butt what other people think about you!

I kinda like me... no matter what you trolls have to say!

Learn from everyday experience. Interact with people. Relate with them. Same thing with animals, plants and nature. Learn and interact with them. You will know they have a certain flow. They give a certain rhythm. Feel it and try to get into it. You will find the rhythm of how to find yourself.
If you learn something, it is your personal knowledge? It will help you see what you like or not. If you learn something about yourself, you will find that it is you. But remember that it can still be changed. You can change it. Learn as much as you can from everything even your fears and doubts. You can face it and change it, if you want to.
You need to remember the epitome of perfection is in you. How you develop your mind, your heart, your spirit, your soul, and you body. Whatever aspect you wish to start with and perfect it leads to you, because you choose what you want. Just remember to balance. Balance is also a natural rhythm. ;-)
