There is no covalent bond. Because Al 3+ is positively charged and Cl- is negatively charged, all of the bonds in AlCl3 are ionic bonds. Covalent bonds are between 2 non-metals and they share electrons. Ionic bonds (like this one) are made with a non-metal and a metal and they transfer electrons.
