I realize a microwave is $40 or so; it's not a particularly big deal. I guess I'm wondering if there is a chance of radiation leak or the microwave undergoing more structural damage; i.e., blowing up and killing me, my loved ones, or my neighbors. I've heard that the newer microwaves have devices that prevent from having damage, but 8 minutes is a very long time I realize. The Microwave was scolding hot, but I let it cool and it does still run / heat.

Should I dispose of it? Or since it still heats should it be okay?

if it still works than it`s OK to use. try not to run it empty because if the microwaves travel back down the wave guide it will burn out the magnetron

There is no danger if a microwave is run empty. The worse that would happen is the magnetron would go bad. Most microwaves have thermal fuses or thermostats that shut the unit down if it gets too hot or if a fire would start(the food burning) in the oven cavity. These safety devices have always been in microwaves from the start. The magnetrons have changed through the years and can take much more abuse than they could before

Use the microwave until it dies which could be years from now with luck.

It will be fine. The microwave is a pretty safe appliance today, and most are so shielded as to no longer pose a threat to those wearing pacemakers, a concern in older models.

Accidental running for longer than intended,I.E., mis-entering the time to cook, as in 20 minutes as opposed to 2 minutes, is a factor considered in the design and manufacture.

As long as the door seals, the mesh screen visible in the door glass is intact, and it operates without any visible problems or smells, it will be fine. There are internal saftey features , and the external breaker in your home that are all that is required.

By the way, a microwave may burn out, but it WON'T explode.

I think it will be OK.
Look on your appliance & see if there is a UL label (USA) or a ULC, or CSA (Canada) label somewhere on it. It's usually displayed where the power cord is attached.

If there are no such labels then yes throw the appliance away because it is not approved for use in any case. I am assuming that you are in North America.

If there is a UL. or ULC label then the model of appliance has been tested in the lab & subjected to every conceivable abuse, & proven to not be a safety hazard.

Naughty! If you'd done that on full power you'd more than likely be out shopping for a new one now - but it's not actually a health hazard any more than if it was full of food.
