Depends if you just want the satisfaction of publishing a book or if you want to try to make a business out of it, because those are the two types of writers - those who write just to publish one book for accomplishment sake, and the other who wants to make it a career.

For beginners, you should pick up "Writers Market", its a book in most libraries, either buy it or just read through it for an hour or so. They'll give you most tips about literary agents, book signings, etc.

For self-publishing, usually that costs you a chunk of change, so basically you only go with that if you think your book is so bad that you need to pay people to publish it... If you think your book is good, you'll think it is good enough for people to pay you to publish it! But literary agents cost money but they'll help you get a good publisher and a good contract.

If you want to make money, first I'd suggest get a professional editor to comb through your book, then look for an agent. They'll find the right publisher.

A good tip though, for copywright purposes, first print out an entire copy of your book, date it, and mail it to yourself and keep it unopened and put it away somewhere. That way, by being un-opened and a postage stamp, if someone tries stealing your book idea you will have the un-opened book right there ready to present to any courtroom (though it probably would never come to that, but its good to be safe)

I just got that questions answered last week.

Take your book to a small publishing company. You can use larger big name companies, but you will be off to a better start with the smaller ones because they will be more willing to take your book before the larger ones will. They would be willing to invest more being that like any other company, they want to grow.

Look around for small publishers. They will put your book together and get it out there on the market. If you get the right company, you should have no worries.

The net is full of publishers and most will take your submission and tell you how they wish it set up. I wrote two books and self published because it is next to imposible to get any of these guys interested. They want your manuscript sent regular mail and believe me it takes up to three years to get an answer if you get one at all.
I have since found a place that take submissions and help you along with your work. Please, please, if you take this route, let me know how well it works for you so I can tell others. Browes to New York Literary Agency and there it shows you what to do. They promise to answer your query in two days and they do. If interested they ask you to send manuscript through email and show you how. They promise to get back to you in two weeks and again they do. They are not self publisher pushers. Good luck and again, please let me know how you make out.
Wayne Also if you decied to self publish I can give you much help here.

Get it copyrighted and a literary agent to get your book to the publishers. Sure it will cost you money, but it will probably be worth it in the long run.

I learned that the first thing you should do is to get it copyrighted, even though it's not necessary to do it because a finished work is automatically copyrighted, but it's to protect yourself in case someone steal your idea, it gives you grounds to take them to court. you can go to http://www.copyright.gov to download the paperwork you need..

before you do anything else you have to make a copy of your manuscript address it to yourself, date it and mail it to your self. once you get the mailed copy of the manuscript you do not open it. so if you have copyright issues in the future.. you have evidence to subs. claim on your work.
