Do not use windex, or paper towels. You can use the eye glass cleaner pads that you use to clean your glasses, or mix 50% alcohol and 50% water, in a spray bottle, and spray on a clean soft cloth (T-Shirt). Do not spray directly on the screen. Turn the screen off first, then you will be able to see the smudges better. Wipe it softly, it will dry almost immediately, because of the alcohol, it does a very good job. I have been using these methods for about three years, and never had any problems with any of my computers. I got this tip, from Kim Komando..Good Luck..
Edit: I am sorry, I thought you was referring to a LCD screen. On a regular screen it is perfectly correct to use windex, and paper towels..

best way is with monitor cleaner. Theres one brand called Klear Wipes i think.

windex works fine for me. spray on the cloth first though, to make sure it doesnt run anywhere it shouldnt on the monitor.
