This is the rectangular black box that the cable from the battery plugs into. If I hold it in my hand it's almost hot enough to start stinging. Is this normal?

Its normal for it to create heat and even get hot to the touch. That happens as part of its job to convert the power from the type that comes out of the outlet to the type your computer needs. Actually, most adapters that plug into a wall for cell phones, cordless phones or whatever do it too, but you tend not to pick those up and move them as frequently so you don't notice. If it gets hot enough that it starts to make a burning smell, then contact the people you got your laptop from. If it makes anything burn or a burning smell, then its faulty and needs to be replaced.

Yes that is why there was a Lawsuit about a scientist men, who put their "Laptop" in his Lap. If you notice they are now called "notebook computers". Anything using that much power will get extremely hot, it's not uncommon for computers parts to get so hot they burn themselves out without proper cooling.

it will get hot, but im not sure if its too good to let it heat up that much...it heats up because its controling the flow of electricity to an amount that your laptop can handle. when your not using your laptop, turn it off or set it on hibernate and unplug it so the plug doesnt get too hot

it will get hot
especially if your battery is low
and the supply is trying to run the laptop
AND CHARGE THE BATTERY
at the same time.
if you are using it at home keep it plugged in while you use it
if the battery is low let it charge with the laptop turned off
to help keep the laptop cool
get a cooling pad to set it on
