I believe that is called Pica and is indicative of iron deficiency. Have your ob check your hemoglobin, you may be anemic and need iron supplements during pregnancy! Good luck!

No but you are talking about the term called pica. It is somewhat common in pregnant women. I know someone who would eat playdo because she had cravings. I've never craved that, usually these cravings are caused by lack of certain minerals I think mostly iron. You might speak to your doctor and see what you can do to prevent these cravings and what vitamins/minerals are in dirt or sand. And ask your doctor what you can do .

12 weeks and 4 days pregnant.

Lots of people have strange cravings...

I knew a lady who craved laundry starch...

Just stick to your prenatal and make sure you take in lots of Folic acid...

Dirt can make you sick and it sounds like there is a mineral that you are maybe smelling, available in it that you need. Ask your doctor for a safe alternative!

Tha'ts called pica and doctor's don't really know what causes it. But if this is you, talk to your doctor anyway. Or ask whoever is having this to talk to theirs.

I'm sorry; normally I do read the whole question! You said it was you. I don't know what to do about it but this site does have a few suggestions. Maybe something here would help.

I have heard of women craving ashes out of the fireplace and brick dust or shavings from the bricks off a house. It sounds strange but not uncommon.

Funny question, although I know it wasn't funny at the time.

I've heard it's a vitamin deficiency. Ask your Dr about it and maybe he can tell you how to get the vitamins you need and prevent the weird cravings.

Actually there is a conditon that some pregnant women get that makes them crave non-food items, its called Pica and you should talk to your Doc cause this usually mean your body is not getting enough of somthing. Heres a link.
