Don't worry about changing them until they give trouble. There is no 'lifespan' to glow plugs like there is with spark plugs. My Powerstroke has over 230,000 with the original glow plugs, and no problems. If one fails, you should get a fault code (service engine light will come on).

Lynda, do not bother to change them as log as the starts on cold days. Make sure at this time if your block heater is working to its full capacity. That's the scoop for starting on cold days. Some day diesel truck manufactures will put a heater in both banks of cylinders. Scoop #2. If you are ever in a real bind and your truck won't start carry a big can of " WD 40" under your seat. It will act as well as starting fluid with out the possible damage that starting fluid drags around with it. The cetane rating is more in line as diesel fuel however it's cleaner and is also a lubricant no more loud rattle and knocking sound. Kiss it goodbye. All dairy farmers in our area have been doing this for years on their really big straight 6 turbocharged tractor motors.
