I have a pair of 14K gold earings, and they are not as shiny as they used to be. Ca I use silver polish for them, r do I have to get something special for them. If it is possible to use something common in a home, that would be even better.

Any cotton cloth will work, ammonia or toothpaste also work. What works really good is baking soda and hot water; brush it in with a toothbrush and then rinse. If you have a steamer that will work too.

I figured this out a couple years ago and it makes the jewelry look brand new.
Take 2 tablespoons white vinager to 3 cups water and boil rapidly in a small pot.
Throw the jewelery into the pot and let boil for 2 - 3 minutes.
Turn off the stove and let sit for 5 - 10 minutes.
Pick up out of the pot with a fork and use a toothbrush to scrub, continuosly dipping toothbrush in water to re-wet with vinegar mixture.
Finally grab some paper towels and polish till gold and diamonds are sparkling like sun off the water. Enjoy =)

Ahh if you put all that on them the metal will get damaged. The only way to get them looking brand new again it to go get them re- polished ( that will remove any scratches or marks)
The best you can do at home is to go get a special gold polishing cloth (should cost around £5) It contains in the cloth a compound that will bring it up nicely. Only ever use washing up liquid and warm water to clean your jewellery.
Tooth paste has (hence the name) paste in it which will act in an abrasive way.

Try vinegar first. It works well. If the ornament has stones go to a professional.
