MSRP on a 1GB 2nd Gen Shuffle is $79.99, so unless you really want the tiny-featherweight-clip-on-iness of the Shuffle, I'd at least bump it up $70 to get the silver 2GB Nano (well, I'd go straight for the 8GB Nano over all the other flash-based iPods, but that's me).

Alternately, you could always get a replacement battery for your current iPod. They use Lithium-Ion batteries, which, while they deliver the most power by weight of any rechargable battery, will die just from old age alone. The start to corrode internally from the day they roll off the production line, and eventually it results in the battery being unable to hold a charge. If Apple can't/won't replace the battery anymore, there are probably online sellers that will happily satisfy the demand.

One other thing to consider is that if you get a new battery for your current iPod, its resale value should go up more than the cost of the battery, since people will usually blow off an iPod that doesn't have a working battery, but if you get a new one installed you can mention that to sell it at a premium.

contact apple about it first, my friend had issues similar to yours and she got a new one free. then that one died for the same reason and now she got a new video one for way cheaper than she would have if she just bought it out of a store. id go with the nano btw, the new shuffle is just weird, and the nano should still hold more songs.
