Another advice is to get a tent and camp at K.K. That'll be a great adventure for you.

Kota Kinabalu is a huge place... I believe you refer to places to sleep near the mountain... you can go to yahoo malaysia and search for mount kinabalu... if you intend to hike the mountain, book early for the accomodation uphill... I booked mine half a year in advance!
If you are only going to kota kinabalu, i am sure you get backpackers motels... there are plenty.. no booking necessary...

From the foregoing answers, it would seem they are from strangers, there are backpackers hostels on every corner in the city centre.
And dont attempt to camp.

but there;s a lot of cheap hotels similar to the rates offered by normal backpakers hotel..
