although the "tan" generaly fades away after the skin tissue affected by the sun rays fall off. The Dermis however; begins reproduction of pigment cells which are dark in color to prevent further damage to deep tissue of the skin. these cells begin to populate the Epidermis therefore increase the "natural" skin tone. this obviously is a dependant of genetic make up, some people darken more than others.
also, just as there could be uneven tanning, there is uneven pigmentation of skin cells, resulting in light patches of the skin.
refer to the following link for more information.
hope this helps..

Tans don't last unless you stay in the sun. Do you know how hard the sun is on the skin. That's why Dr.'s say stay out of the sun or buy tanning sprays. Not to say that it ages you 10 years older by the time you're 50 you can look 65 years old. Not to say anything about skin cancer.

it will return to normal but just over a longer period of time. The darker the skin the quicker it returns but then again darker skin is dark skin already!!
When I was surfing on the beach in Daytona USA, I was black as all night long!! but return to my regular sexy smooth milk chocolate complexion.
