I just bought a pentium D 820. My motherboard allows me to overclock, it is currently default at 200MHz with 14 times multiplier. What can I increase the bus speed to without risk of much harm (I keep my box pretty cool - artic cooling cpu fan + extra fan). Runs at around 40C right now.

If you're not a gamer, don't overclock. You will not notice the difference at all in windows, internet, letters, etc. The reason to overclock is a program (like games) that are running slow and trying to get some "extra" speed out of the system.

If you want to be safe, you must keep a close eye on your temps when running at full load. There is a program called Prim95, google it. It has a "torture test" option. Only increase speed in short increment. After each increment, run prime95 for several hours, just to be sure that you are stable and not over heating. Also, there is a program called throtlewatch that you can use to see if your cpu is throttling, which it will do if it gets too hot. If it becomes unstable, then you will need to increase the voltage, but this will increase heat production. Messing with the voltages can easily damage your cpu, so you need to be careful with that.
The safest bet would be to step one increment back from the point where the comp gets too hot or unstable at full load. That's probably the safest place.

Ususally to be safe you need to raise the FSB by 5MHZ at a time, go into windows and stress the cpu with some program like : CPU Burn-in, test for like 5-10 min, if it doesn't freeze then , raise again the FSB and repeat procedure, until the stress test fails.

At that point you are hitting your max. lower the fsb by 5mhz and repeat the stress test for 1 hour, if it 's successful leave the overclock at that FSB.

You always have risk when overclocking it's very time consuming, When i lose patience i jump the FSB by 50mhz at a time, lol, and sometimes it really screws things up, but i've never destroyed any hardware because of it.

good luck

I Think Intel is not a OC option
Many of my friends try OC intel Chip and they blow out...
I use AMD A64 3000+ (200MHz x9)
I OC to 220x9 and it's still ok...

Over clocking is an option but some times it will void your warrenty on your chips.
But if you keep it cool it should be no problem.
