NOt a very big fan of progressive I'm afraid, but I have to say Robert Fripp, only because he's married to my all time Favourite "Toyah". Second I'd place Alex Lifeson (He's from Rush, isn't he? I like Rush. Third Dave Gilmour, as I know Pink Floyd. The other two, no idea, sorry.

Vai is amazing and obviously one of the most talented guitar players to ever live. He does go a little overboard at times and is a very weird human being to say the least!! BUT he does have some very soulful and emotional playing despite what some may think...just listen to For the Love of God and Lotus Feet... I own almost everything Vai has recorded and I love the stuff he did w/Alcatrazz, super awesome. I am more of a Satch fan but Vai has been one of my favorites for many many years...I try to see him live every chance I get and really enjoy learning his songs, it has helped me to become a much better player over the years. plus Vai plays with my favorite drummer...Jeremy Colson!!! edit...all of you that say Vai is emotionless and cold obviously have not listened to much of his music or seen him live. IT IS possible to play incredibly fast and crazy and also be soulful.

Robert Fripp for his "Soundscapes," technique that employed digital technology instead of tapes to create loops.

David Gilmore for the way he incorporates technical skills (note bends and sustain) in his solos and for his lasting popularity in the world of Rock guitar.

John McLaughlin for his technical virtuosity, inventiveness, and the ability to play in odd meters.

Ritchie Blackmore for his new direction in forming the Renaissance-inspired Folk Rock band "Blackmore's Night".
I especially like his cover of Emanuel on the new recording "Winter Carols"

David Gilmour all the way, just listen to the second solo on comfortably numb if you need reassurance.

i think it's down to personal taste but to be honest i think David Gilmour tops the tree because a lot of what he did in Floyd's early years paved the way for others to follow

David Gilmour. His solos in "Time" and "Comfortably Numb" win me over.

Your list while being great leaves out the master, Nigel Tufnel. Jeff Beck said this was the only man he could still learn from.
