friendship is important because, as human beings, we want and need to have connections with other human beings. and friends, unlike family, are chosen companions. you choose them, and they choose you. friends are especially valuable for individuals who aren't supported by their families or are estranged from them. friends can become their families, offering the love and encouragement they aren't getting from their families. i know i never would've made it this far or been as successful at accomplishing my goals without my friends, as they were the only ones who ever seemed to truly understand me (to my family, i was an oddity, with strange goals like wanting to get an advanced degree), and always gave me 100% support, no matter what i did. they also loved me enough to tell me when i was being an idiot and not exercising good judgment, which helped me from making lots of mistakes along the way.
hope this helps, if even a little, and good luck with your essay! :)

Think about it this way, what would you be without any friendship? You'll have no friends. You would be lonely, there would be nobody to turn to when your down or have a problem. You'll have nobody to talk to, nobody help you. Everyday, while other people talk about stuff their interested in, you won't be. You'll be all alone. Do you really want that? Friends make you who you are. They stand by you. They will make you happier when you're sad, because they'll know how to. Everyone needs friendship or at least someone who likes them. It is what makes you human. If you didn't you wouldn't be human. That's why friendship is important.

Here is a HINT. Go to the bookstore and buy "The Prophet" by by Kahlil Gibran. It starts on page 58; you are looking at maybe $20.
It was required reading in hs and I have probably read it 200 times since (I am 61 and I always find something NEW).
DO NOT copy because you will get BUSTED in a heartbeat; quote your sources and you will be fine.
GOOD CHOICE because it is UP there!
Having a FRIEND is easier than being a FRIEND because it is WORK! Ethics, truth and understanding also play a big part. TRUE friends will also learn the art of compromise and it is your training for marriage. ALL the issues of FRIENDSHIP apply to marriage; if your partner can't be your TRUE FRIEND, then move on.
Hope this helps and a STAR to your teacher!

Friendship, for us teenagers, is an essential value that helps us to get over the difficulties of life. Real friends are difficult to find and the less common features are sincerity, loyalty, protection, altruism, kindness, tolerance and respect.
We think money can’t buy friendship in fact the only way to have a friend is to be one. It isn’t true that old friends are best, because sometimes they betray you.
A friend helps you, he stands near you in the difficult moments, he listens to you and he gives advices.
Real friends have to keep every secrets and so they are the medicine of life. A friend doesn’t judge you!
It’s nice to have a person with whom we may be sincere; it’s not necessary to share the some ideas, it’s most important to be a good friend. We believe that true friendship never ends!

1. You can bounce your crazy ideas off someone who won't think you're crazy. Thus it helps you adjust to reality.
2. Your friends provide you with a safety net in times of crisis.
3. They are an anchor. When you are depressed or have the urge to do something destructive, they can keep you safe.
4. A good friend validates you, makes you feel worthy, valuable.
5. You do things with friends, like going to a museum or amusement park, that you wouldn't bother doing by yourself.
6. Good times spent with friends reduce stress and make you healthier.
7. They can give you ideas for dealing with problems. They help you see things from a different perspective. They know people you don't know (like someone who can repair drywall or change your car's oil).
8. They give you an outlet for blowing off steam when your spouse, kids, or job is driving you nuts.
9. They feed your dog when you go on vacation.
10. They take you to the airport at 2:00 a.m when your other ride falls through.
Wow. You've made me appreciate my friends more. I think I'll go call someone!

Well, if you have friends, then you should know exactly the reason and we shouldn't give you the answers.
Friendship isn't like 2+2 = 4. It's an emotional and mental complex.
But just to help you out:
Friendship is important because it keeps us sane as human beings. We are thinkers and usually have something in our minds or something to express, to whom? our Friends!!
Also, Friends can be helpful, encouraging, and enjoyable to be around with. They keep us jubilant when we're depressed and etc...
You should know the rest!!!

I would suggest you look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friendship as a helpful guide on the subject of friendship. Its hard to have a rational conversation regarding something that just isn't rational all the time.
Good Luck!!!
