We had this problem off and on for some time, and just got it fixed this past summer - there was a pretty severe blockage in the line from the house. We had been doing quick fixes by having the plumber snake it out every so often, but then the clog (ours was tree roots growing thru the old pipes) became constant and the pipes (and tree!) had to be removed - quite expensive, but if it had been caught earlier it may not have been such a big deal. If your plumber wants to send a camera down to see what's going on, it may be worth it to avoid big costs in the future. Good luck! It's kinda spooky sound, huh? Amityville!

I suspect the sanitary stack......the part that goes through the roof...is clogged. It is the pressure release system for plumbing and if clogged, the whole system has problems.
This is not a homeowner job. You need to contact severall plumbing companies and get a quote for snaking out the sanitary stacks. They have the equipment and knowledge...oh yeah, if they say you don't need it, call another company. Someone unknown in the process can break the pipe in the wall and that's not something that you want to happen.
The stack gets clogged with leaves from overhead trees, birds falling in, etc.

you may have a clog in you sewage line going out of the house. or possible pipe damage. get a plumbing company with an auger to clean the pipes out or a little camera thay can put down the pipes to see what the problem is. such as possible pipe collapse. some pipes under ground can be made of ceramic.

Sounds like the sewer vent is clogged.
Go on the roof and stick a hose down the sewer vent pipe to flush it out.
Could be a birds nest stuck in the vent pipe.
