Bi-monthly is ambiguous. It can mean every second month or twice a month. A more precise way to say it is either semi-monthly or every second month.

Think bicycle and semicircle. As a bicycle consists of two cycles (wheels) and a semicircle is a half circle, so bimonthly is two monthly or every two months and semi monthly is half monthly or every half a month. The Concise Oxford says it could also be twice a month, though, and there are so many contradictory answers above that there is obviously confusion.

If you had them weekly they would be every week. Bimonthly is every bi-month (2 months). Semi-monthly is every semi-month (half month), or twice a month.
