How would i go about installing a 40gb ide hard drive into my dell latitude notebook if i already have the caddy. The thing is its that the caddy is a wierd black bar that goes across that has the little holes that the hard drive needs to connect to. But my problem is that i cant seem to get it correct.

You should give your laptops model #.
Since we dont have that my best advice is to search google for the info you need.
Type this in Dell (insert your model # here) hard drive .
or Dell (insert your model # here) caddy
or Dell (insert your model # here) hard drive installation .
It may even help to browse the image results
Good Luck

See this page, http://www.bixnet.com/delnothardri2.html if that is what you have the "black bar" is the IDE connector for a 3.5" laptop hard drive. You plug the hard drive ribbon/connector into the hard drive and lay the hard drive into the metal caddy/container. Hope this helps I will check back for a response

Usually the laptop hard drives have an adapter on one end of the caddy. You plug the drive into it then screw it into the caddy. The caddy then connects directly into the slot which is then also screwed down.
