They were probably going after your delicious onion ring that you're holding. The fact that you were coming from the P.A. meeting was in all likelihood, purely coincidental. In the future, you might want to install one of those inflatable fake owls on your shoulder to further ward them off. You know, like they put on the tops of tall buildings to keep pigeons away. Hmmmm, now I'm not sure if that would keep the owls away. But I do know this, it's sure as hell gonna keep people away from you.
