More traditional death metal assumes the form of...
Morbid Angel, Mercyful Fate, Death, Obituary [One of the greatest bands in my opinion], Bolt Thrower, Sentenced, Mortiis, Bezerker, Deicide, Mortuary, Baphomet, Sepultura, Hate Eternal, Vader, and a few of the other bands that have been mentioned, like Napalm Death, Carcass [partially formed from Napalm Death, and a bunch of Vegans].
I'm sorry but Lamb of God, Cradle of Filth (If they had a decent vocalist they wouldn't be that bad, but they suck), and Dimmu Borgir, along with other bands that follow suit are crossbreeds... they can't be grouped into pure death... this is more Synthetic Death stemming from European Influence, or borders Emo Death... be careful these bands are like powermetal they'll suck you in... Dragon Force, and Rhapsody are good examples of catchy powermetal riffs...
Ancient, Finntroll, and a bunch more of the crossbreeds come in the form of... Windir, Therion (this band is all over the place, opera, concept, death, synth, you name it), Bathory, Behemoth, Gorgoroth, Haggard, Limbonic Art, Moonspell, Immortal, Emperor, Old Man's Child, Otep, Norther, Katatonia, Eternal Tears of Sorrow, Dark Funeral, Bal Sagoth, Absu, Fall of Leafe, Woods of Belial, Thyrfang (SP?), Amon Amarth, Graveworm [Amazing band with some great concept albums], and Darkthrone...
There's also on the loose end of death dance type stuff like Blutengel, Diary of Dreams, 69 Eyes, etc... Nightwish, Beholder, After Forever, are on the softer side... closer to Operatic, powermetal, death, and sometimes just outright sappy.

Im not sure if you would call them death metal, but Otep is a great band with a female singer. You should also check out Acid Bath.

There is: Stick the knife straight into my eye and twist it. They are not that great, though they are all blind. Then there is: Do not open your eyes because that means your still alive. Their lead singer sounds like he is gargling blood when he hits high notes. However, my fave is; Why where you even born if you want death? They sing and play from coffins with holes for their legs so they can walk around on stage with a hatchet wedge into their foreheads and blood dripping into their open mouths. Gruesome huh?
